Russian outbound market jumps by almost a third

TurStat Agency has published the results of the Russian outbound market for the first nine months of 2017, from 1 January to 30 September, and it is positive news for the industry.

Overall indicators show that outbound tourism grew 27% over the first nine months of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016.

30.972 million Russian citizens travelled abroad during the period, rising from 24.314 million the previous year. This is just shy of the 2016 full-year total of 31.7 million.

Top destinations include:

-          Turkey 3.9 million (+717%)
-          Finland 2.4 million (+17%)
-          Kazakhstan 2.3 million (+3.5%)
-          Ukraine 1.7 million (+24%)
-          China 1.4 million (+25%)
-          Estonia 1.2 million (+14.5%)
-          Poland 929,000 (+11%)
-          Germany 918,000 (+19%)
-          Georgia 802,000 (+35%)
-          Spain 794,000 (+19%)

These are followed by destinations that all saw healthy increases: Greece 792,000 (10%), Cyprus 738,000 (7%), Italy 713,000 (28%), Thailand 706,000 (26%), and Azerbaijan 567,000 (16%).

Certain beach destinations saw significant uplifts: the Dominican Republic (117%), Cuba (130%), UAE (41%), Vietnam (27%), and Israel (20%).

More Russian tourists also travelled to European countries during the period: Austria (37%), the Czech Republic (42%), and France (22%), as well as the aforementioned Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Germany, and Poland.
