25 years MITT

logo_25.jpgAs we celebrate 25 years of MITT, we take a trip down memory lane to find out how it all began.

MITT’s story began in March 1994, when the very first show took place at the International Exhibition Centre at Krasnaya Presnya (now Expocentre). The exhibition featured 458 companies from 31 countries, including long-standing partners Art Tour, Roza Vetrov, PAC Group, and VAND, аs well as tourist boards from Hungary, Greece, Dubai, India, Spain, Cyprus, Cuba, Malaysia, Romania, Tunisia, Turkey, Croatia, and Sri Lanka.

The show covered around 4,500 sqm over parts of two halls in Pavilion 2. Over time, the show was to bring together all major players on the tourism market.

MITT’s early days reflected the fledgling tourism industry in Russia. The first chartered flights were just being launched and travel companies didn’t distinguish themselves as tour operators or tour agencies. The Internet and mobile phones were not widely used, so business communication was largely done via fax. The floorplans for the first exhibitions were actually drawn on squared paper – unimaginable today.

The market began to grow at a tremendous pace. International companies and hotel chains sought to enter the Russian market and the number of travel companies increased rapidly. Visitors to MITT skyrocketed; everyone wanted to source partners, sign contracts, and open new offices.

Always the flagship tourism show for Moscow and the country as a whole, its opening ceremonies have been graced by many politicians over the years.

Our exhibitors and visitors began to affectionately refer to MITT as ‘Mitovskaya’ in Russian. Some even confused the T with a D and were convinced the MID (Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) had a hand in the exhibition.

One year, a news correspondent mistook the hordes of visitors with suitcases (representatives of regional travel agencies collecting advertising material) and announced live on national television that thousands of tourists attended MITT ready to buy tickets and go straight to the airport on holiday.

Over the years, MITT has earned its place in the global tourism business and has established itself as one of the top five tourism shows in the world, alongside those in London and Berlin.
The show reflects the situation in the industry and serves as a narrative for the development and state of the tourism industry: people, companies, ambitions, failures, and successes.

The exhibition now covers more than 50,000 sqm over eight halls and pavilions at Expocentre. Its vibrant, unique character has enabled it to remain a leading event for 25 years. With an enormous line-up of exhibitors, 2,000 companies presenting around 190 countries and regions, the show covers both the summer and winter tourism seasons.

In 2017, MITT became a B2B only event to benefit both exhibitors and visitors. This now means that its visitors are the most relevant and targeted for our exhibitors. Representatives of travel businesses from all regions of Russia and many other countries come to MITT each year to meet existing and potential partners. In 2017, 23,047 professionals attended the exhibition, 68% of whom were representatives of travel agencies with senior roles from heads of departments to company owners (65%) from 79 Russian regions. The show also saw international visitors from 89 different countries.

Each year, countries choose MITT to showcase their destinations to the Russian market, while the presence of Russian destinations also increases year on year. In 2017, businesses from more than 60 Russian regions and resorts presented their tourism opportunities to find new partners among exhibitors and visitors. Practically every major domestic tourism operator takes part in MITT. The trade event involves the participation of industry experts for each tourism sector, to answer questions from tourism professionals.

MITT is three days of open doors to a huge number of suppliers and agencies, and the opportunity to hold talks, present your services to a wide audience of professionals, and get new business contacts. Take advantage of it!

One world – One show
