The Russian outbound travel market has gone from strength to strength in recent years and 2018 has been no different.

Following a hugely successful year in 2017 when outbound trips from Russia rose 25%, during 2018 growth of another 5.8% was seen, bringing the total up to 42 million trips, according to Rosstat, the Russian State Statistics Service.

So, where are Russians travelling?

The top destinations among Russian tourists for 2018 were:

Turkey - (5.7 million trips) +27%
Finland - (4.5 million trips) +1%
Kazakhstan - (2.9 million trips) -1%
Ukraine - (2.3 million trips) +0.3%
China - (2 million trips) +1%
Estonia - (1.8 million trips) +4%
Germany - (1.3 million trips) +5.5%
Georgia - (1.2 million trips) +23%
Thailand - (1.1 million trips) +7%
Poland - (1.1 million trips) -11%
 
Turkey has remained in prime position following its return to the market in 2017.
 
Other key destinations include Italy – 1 million, Spain – 961,000, UAE – 941,000, Cyprus – 826,000, Greece – 808,000, Azerbaijan – 748,000, Lithuania – 635,000, Tunisia – 611,000, Vietnam – 531,000, Bulgaria – 437,000, Czech Republic – 494,000, and France – 476,000.
 
Destinations showing the highest year-on-year growth include:
 
Hungary (+51%), Cuba (+46%), Hong Kong (+32%), Uzbekistan (+28%), Portugal (+28%), Maldives (+27%), Turkey (+27%), Georgia (+23%), Qatar (+23%), Japan (+23%), UAE (+23%), Italy (+22%), Mongolia (+22%), and Croatia (+19%).
